    00:00:00.280 --> 00:00:04.220
>> I'm Yolanda Wisher and I'm a
multidisciplinary poet educator

    00:00:04.220 --> 00:00:06.460
in the third poet laureate of Philadelphia.

    00:00:06.460 --> 00:00:11.970
As a poet, I write, I teach, I
perform, I do community organizing.

    00:00:11.970 --> 00:00:16.670
And as the poet laureate, I serve as an
ambassador for poetry throughout the city.

    00:00:16.670 --> 00:00:18.370
Well, I work with the organization,

    00:00:18.370 --> 00:00:21.720
a national organization called The
U.S. Department of Arts and Culture.

    00:00:21.720 --> 00:00:24.070
And it's a performance of a federal agency.

    00:00:24.070 --> 00:00:28.280
It's not a real federal agency,
but we're a grassroots organization

    00:00:28.280 --> 00:00:30.870
that connects local organizing
all over the country.

    00:00:30.870 --> 00:00:36.590
And a lot of our events are arts infused
participatory events that invite people

    00:00:36.590 --> 00:00:41.610
to share their arts, their cultural
perspective with each other.

    00:00:41.610 --> 00:00:46.950
Well, this past February I was part of an
event called the Poetic Address to the Nation,

    00:00:46.950 --> 00:00:50.200
which was part of an initiative called
the People's State of the Union,

    00:00:50.200 --> 00:00:54.920
which is kind of our attempt to invite
people to reflect on the state of the union

    00:00:54.920 --> 00:00:59.080
as a democratic voice not
just the monologue that kind

    00:00:59.080 --> 00:01:01.170
of becomes the president's state of the union.

    00:01:01.170 --> 00:01:04.240
And then, you know, we invite
people to share their stories

    00:01:04.240 --> 00:01:06.540
in story circles around the country.

    00:01:06.540 --> 00:01:12.630
And the stories were coordinated and collated
into a poetic address that was written

    00:01:12.630 --> 00:01:16.390
from poets across the nation and
performed by poets here in Philadelphia.
