WEBVTT

00:00:00.096 --> 00:00:04.186 A:middle
>> My name is Sara Gisbane, and I am a
social worker with Waukesha Human Services.

00:00:04.516 --> 00:00:09.936 A:middle
So, it's working with kids all throughout
Waukesha County and their families.

00:00:10.266 --> 00:00:14.536 A:middle
And what we do is we provide services
to get them off of the waiver list,

00:00:14.536 --> 00:00:17.936 A:middle
and the waiver list is for
kids who have special needs.

00:00:18.206 --> 00:00:21.646 A:middle
They may have some form of
developmental disorder

00:00:21.646 --> 00:00:25.606 A:middle
or a mental health or developmental disability.

00:00:25.996 --> 00:00:29.846 A:middle
And so, they want to stay in
their houses with their families.

00:00:30.156 --> 00:00:32.946 A:middle
So, if they need a ramp we could
find funding to get them a ramp.

00:00:32.946 --> 00:00:37.366 A:middle
If they need transportation services, we
can help them get transportation services.

00:00:37.366 --> 00:00:42.116 A:middle
So what I do is I really kind of
find the resources for that family

00:00:42.766 --> 00:00:44.386 A:middle
but that all begins with a screen.

00:00:44.756 --> 00:00:49.296 A:middle
So first we screen the family and the
child and determine if they're eligible,

00:00:49.706 --> 00:00:55.076 A:middle
and now we determine what level they're eligible
at and then we just go forward from there.

00:00:55.896 --> 00:00:58.926 A:middle
Sometimes I can go -- a family might
want to meet at 8:00 a.m. Right now,

00:00:58.926 --> 00:01:03.436 A:middle
it's summer so they have more
flexibility because a lot of kids are

00:01:03.436 --> 00:01:06.416 A:middle
out of school right now so they
can meet anytime during the day.

00:01:06.806 --> 00:01:11.866 A:middle
During the school hours you're working
later hours because families might want

00:01:11.866 --> 00:01:14.386 A:middle
to meet more like five or 6:00 at night.

00:01:14.816 --> 00:01:21.606 A:middle
So it all just depends on what the family's
flexibility and I go with what they need.

00:01:21.996 --> 00:01:27.366 A:middle
They might need just therapy, in-home therapy;
and so, we would also make sure that they are

00:01:27.366 --> 00:01:30.346 A:middle
on the right insurance, that
they have Medicaid approval,

00:01:30.806 --> 00:01:33.066 A:middle
and we make sure that that
stays the entire time.

00:01:33.066 --> 00:01:35.046 A:middle
So, some families fall off.

00:01:35.046 --> 00:01:36.426 A:middle
Some people come back on.

00:01:36.426 --> 00:01:39.796 A:middle
We make sure those kids don't
fall off of the Medicaid approval.

00:01:40.226 --> 00:01:41.916 A:middle
[Inaudible] transportation is a big one.

00:01:41.996 --> 00:01:48.006 A:middle
So getting kids -- so some parents don't even
have a vehicle or they work two or three jobs.

00:01:48.006 --> 00:01:51.526 A:middle
It's really expensive to have a
child with special needs; and so,

00:01:51.636 --> 00:01:53.666 A:middle
we -- a lot of times transportation.

00:01:54.096 --> 00:01:54.956 A:middle
In-home therapy.

00:01:55.276 --> 00:01:57.616 A:middle
A lot of times with a kid with
special needs, it's hard to get them

00:01:57.616 --> 00:01:59.496 A:middle
out of their house, out of their comfort zone.

00:01:59.776 --> 00:02:03.716 A:middle
So it's good to bring that stuff to them.

00:02:03.856 --> 00:02:08.346 A:middle
Just recently we had a child who was really
just having a hard time sleeping in their bed.

00:02:08.786 --> 00:02:10.236 A:middle
We got them a tent.

00:02:10.596 --> 00:02:13.596 A:middle
It was as simple as getting them
a tent to sleep in their bed.

00:02:13.776 --> 00:02:16.456 A:middle
So, we purchased a tent for them.

00:02:16.506 --> 00:02:21.566 A:middle
The child was really excited and helped pick it
out, and they've been sleeping great ever since.

00:02:21.566 --> 00:02:22.000 A:middle
